In response to Chris Burke beats a Chapel Hill

I always enjoy reading your articles in the Lincoln Times, especially the recent article about Chris Burke. People are either pro life or pro death. The word "choice" is a cop out used by people who don't have the guts to admit they are pro death. Harris is obviously pro death. Keep up the good work.

In response to We're being gouged Where's the outrage?

I have enjoyed reading your columns in the local paper Lincoln Times-News. The article on high tuition costs was the most recent and I felt a need to comment. I graduated many years ago, have no one i am paying for (at least directly), but am deeply concerned about this. Even private schools were more affordable for the average student when i graduated in 1968.
Public schools should be audited and evaluated on how their budgets are used. We taxpayers subsidize tuition while students and parents pay the rest. Departments such as women's studies and black or Afro-American studies should be eliminated. They have no proven benefit. If somehow deemed necessary, certainly one course on the subject should suffice. If research into these issues is important, then let private schools and think tanks spend their dollars on it.
Further, no illegal immigrants should be in our institutions of higher learning (although most are such in name only). If there is room for them, then the schools can reduce their size and budget. If room is an issue, then an American citizen should be in their place.
Most if not all public colleges and universities should be exclusively teaching and not involved in research. We need to spend tax money and tuition money on education, and not on research, much of which is duplicated elsewhere or of little practical use. i am not referring so much as research in the sciences and medicine as the so called social sciences.
Administrations should be as efficient as public corporations in terms of staffing and expenses.
In any case, thank you for another interesting article. i always look forward to more.

In response to To liberals free speech is a one-way street

Just wanted you to know that there are those out here who really appreciate a good dose of common sense. Thanks for the words.
Bob W.

I enjoyed your column today as I usually do. I would like to refresh your memory as to how some people in Waynsville were treated when the congregation that they belonged to were told that there were members among them that voted for the liberal party in the last election. They lost their membership in the church of their choice. they lost their right to free speech as well as their freedom to assemble and honor God as they saw fit. Their views were made fun of and they were ostracized from the community. Where is your free choice to vote when the churches here collectively hand out voter lists?
I don't approve of much that goes on in tinsel town but I do have enough of an understanding to know that homosexuality is not a choice. There is a part of the brain near the center that is called the hypothalamus, where one's sexuality is defined. In that area in 80% of homosexual men, the hypothalamus is the size of a females and visa versa. This is not absolute but science today is accepting this as a most probable cause.
As far as free speech here is concerned,I know that I have to be careful what I say in front of certain people in fear being ostracized from this community. If I'm in someone's house and they don't watch national television or read a national newspaper it's pretty safe to assume that they are conservatives and I have to be careful of any conversation I get in. Since I know these parameters I can navigate pretty well and keep from saying something that is offensive to someone. So we may have free speech but one must be careful how its used.
Best wishes for a happy and merry Christmas.

Part 1
So Bush,Cheney,Rove and the rest of the mental midgets in the white house are involved in covering up a crime of outing a C I A agent. I'll bet you don't have the intestinal fortitude to call for their impeachment.

Part 2
The outing of a CIA agent is one thing. The act of covering it up and all the perjury involved are another. They also set up a fall guy,and then commuted his sentence. Don't insult your own intelligence with all the drivel you have been spewing. Your first note was so full of factual errors. When I have the time I'll correct them, meanwhile I have to run a business because Bush destroyed my pension. Have you noticed how the market is dropping like a led rock? My pension is tied to the market and I have no control over it. If you knew anything about the markets and pensions you wouldn't have written the things you did.

Robert L.

**********************************************************************************************************
No matter how you try to paint George Bush,He will always be known as the worst president this country has ever had.His life has been a series of failures from the three times he went bankrupt losing 250 million in the oil business to the worst presidency ever. He has selected SMU university to house his library. They don't want it because they say it would be an embarrassment, just as he has embarrassed this country for the last seven years. I retired in1999 and had one and a half good years until the 2000 election. From 2000 to 2003 I lost 57%of my pension due to the Bush economy. Hundred of thousands of retired people who had their life's work invested in the stock market were in the same boat I am in. The same thing happened when Nixon,Reagan and Bush took office. The market always does better under the Democrats. this country is worse off today than it was seven years ago. This should be self evident to every one. It is especially noticeable here in Lincolnton where the middle class is almost nowhere to be seen. That has always been the conservative agenda. Subjugate the poor and uneducated to be slaves of the business class. The 25 states that have the worst education systems are almost all in the South and are red states.North Carolina is 39th and the two worst states Texas and Florida are both Bush states. So much for "no child left behind". It seems the conservative agenda is to keep people dumb,so they'll vote Republican

In repsonse to Will the real xenophobe please stand up?

Immigration seems to be becoming the hot issue, in some cases overtaking the war. I have a problem with some things about the discussion and actually agree with some, despite the fact that I am hispanic. Now you say that some activists are calling for illegals to vote, well even I have a problem with that. Please how could you allow non-citizens to vote and is that kind of message that turns a lot of people off to their message. We have a problem and all I hear is some ridiculous solutions. We are going to put a fence, for what, besides use of taxpayer money. How hard can the fence be to get over, what our government hasn't been informed that they have ladders in Mexico. Let me think here, just maybe if you gave people no reason to come here like employment and free benefits then they would not. Maybe just maybe if you came down so hard on companies for hiring undocumented workers that it would truly scare them in to not doing it, then we might start solving our problem. Now how about the ones who are already here and how do we get them out. That is going to be a logistical nightmare, but it can be done. Now, I figure we should allow some to stay, yes I know they broke the law, but some of these people are good people and should be forgiven just as long as they meet certain requirements. No police record for the time they have been here, have been here for a certain amount of years, should be able to defend themselves in the english language and be willing to pay a fine. I would not worry about being called a racist, I am called worst than that I am called a traitor and you see how many concessions I am actually willing to make. What I am tired of is a bunch of proposals and no real action. I just had to pay a deductible on my car because the person that ran into us did not have insurance, I wonder why. We already have socialized medicine in this country for the poor and the illegal immigrants. One last thing I lived in South America for 2 years when I was a teenager and when I turned 18, I decided to come back home. I had to pay a huge fine to get out of the country, so let's stop worrying about what others countries think and do what is right for ours. America has a big heart, but we also need to have a brain about this so we can fix this problem by using both. Let's be compassionate, yet unforgiving to those who do not deserve it.

In response to Ahmadinejad accomplishes his goal thanks to Columbia's Useful Idiots

Keep up the good work! I am a first time visitor to your site! I bet you would be a good guest on the "No Spin Zone"! Have you ever considered it!??
D. F.
Gulf War Vet, USAF Security LZ-94, 1990-91
American Legion Member And a Bill O' Reilly Junkie

I find it somewhat ironic that we as a country are so opposed to having him speak at Columbia. If I am not mistaken, we have a senator with very legitimate ties to the KKK serving in congress. Yet we give him a voice and let him vote and decide for us. The fact is if Ahmadinejad wanted to speak out against our country, our news channels would broadcast it, just like they do Bin Laden. We as country have to stop thinking that we are better because the fact is our leader if you want to call him that, is by far more despised than he ever will be around the world. I personally do not care for either and I would prefer both kept their opinions to themselves, but unfortunately one of them gets to speak on my behalf and his words harm the opinion that the rest of the world has of me as an American. As far as Yamamoto goes I believe that is a horrible comparison. For one he actually admired American culture and I believe he was just serving his country as he felt was his duty. You know sort of like our troops in Iraq are doing now. Besides Yamamoto did go to school here in the U.S. grant it not after Pearl Harbor, but he was here also. I believe we need to leave the Iranian dictator alone, besides we have made them suffer enough was it not us who put a figurehead (Shah) in control to serve our interests not the Iranians. In closing I guess what you are saying is ok with me, since we do not really need more idiots speaking in our country we have plenty of our own to parade around.

“We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity.” Ann Coulter
By the way a national bestselling author is that not wonderful for our credibility in setting ethical standards.

Jaime R.

Mr. Hager... As a moderate Democrat, I agree fully with your article in The Gazette. Ahmadinejad, Perez and the like should never be allowed inside the USA, except to go directly to the United Nations and then directly back out. It is bad enough that they are allowed to speak at the United Nations, but it is indeed particularly offensive that any college or other entity in the USA would allow them a forum. I am much more of a hawk than a dove when it comes to national security and I believe most Democrats are hawks rather than doves. Only the left-wing fringe fanatics would say Ahmadinejad or Perez should be welcome here. I know your article did not portray any particular political party as soft on people like Ahmadinejad and Perez and I would hope your readers would not read such a conclusion into it.

As far as useful idiots are concerned, that accurately defines middle-class and lower income people who ignore their wallet and vote for Conservative Republicans based on wedge issues that seldom apply to themselves personally. It is ironic that the wedge issues remain unresolved despite Republicans in control...(such as legalized abortion) because the Republican strategists may not really want to lose the advantage that wedge issues give them.

No reply wanted, since I have no more interest in debating such matters with you that you do with me.

Great article as are all of your articles. If we all practiced more forgiveness, this would be a much greater country. I am pleased with your common sense approach to life. So many of our younger generation lack common sense. I feel it has been destroyed by TV, and other high tech items at our disposal today, but I can't prove it. I am surprised that The Gazette is willing to publish your right wing articles, but I am very pleased that they do. Keep up the good work. You are appreciated.

Response to Yes I will question the peace activist's patriotism
I suggest you read a book from the Gastonia Public Library that I recently read entitled, "What Every American Needs to Know about the Rest of the World." I don't want to close down the Pentagon, but it is shocking to hear how much the U.S. economy is driven by the military (your war machine). And we are so in debt. I feel you must be in favor of a government that rewards rich people, awards the contracts to their friends, and give bonuses to people who don't do a good job (as in Walter Reed Hospital).

You write as if the "Left" includes the only war protesters. I'm tired of hearing only left and right, black and white when there are many shades and hope of compromises in the middle. As long as the right keeps alienating the left, there isn't much hope for compromise. There are many people who see both sides and would like to hear more "middle" rhetoric. Maybe the current war protester would rather see wars fought in ways other than military. And we can not financially afford this war. The First Amendment protects everyone's right to be fools.

S. Perry

(NOTE: This message sparked a very polite email debate with S. Perry. I don't agree with the reader's point, but they were offered rationally. Nothing the virulent war protester, such as described in the column above, does is rational or thoughtful.)

Response to Is there an environmentalist in the house?
I agree with your comments about global warming in the Wednesday issue of the Gaston Gazette. You expressed them clearly and with compelling logic.
You will recall that certain members of congress threatened the energy companies if they continued to counter the drum beat of warming with scientific fact. This same logic dictates that we destroy our economy and allow the "emerging" nations (notably China) to do as they wish.
A simple and fast way to reduce carbon emissions is to raise the cost of gasoline to $5-6 per gallon and lower the speed limit by say, 20 miles per hour.
Unfortunately, the media will continue to proclaim Al Gore as the scientific genius of the millennium and Mr. William Jefforson Clinton as the role model for goodness and virtue.
Keep up the good work.

G. Gwynette

I love getting inside information like you gave in the above commentary. Is this true about both Gore and Bush and how their households are run. Where do you get the information? This is great info to slam the libs with when they get on their “high horse” with their self righteous proclamations. If it is true, it is so typical of the liberals to tell everybody else what to do, while they do exactly the opposite. But, I do need some sources to cite, so it doesn’t look like I’M making this incredibly ridiculous stuff up. I have no doubt it is true, but what can I show people?
Thanks for your help.

My name is K. Phillips of Lucia. My father, J. Dowell, is an 87 year old resident at Stanley Total Living Center in Stanley. He read your 3/3 article in the Gaston Gazette and asked that I please try to contact you to thank you for what you wrote. He is a WWII vet and participated in the D-Day invasion, Battle of the Bulge and other European campaigns. He saw and experienced many of the same situations as the soldiers you wrote about. He is extremely proud of his service and appreciates when anyone recognizes the sacrifices of our armed forces. His mind is as bright as ever, especially when it comes to stories about the Army. He was in the 3rd Armor Division and can tell you stories that will make your hair stand up. He joined the Army before he was actually of legal ago to do so. At one point they tried to give him a battlefield commission, but there was some snafu because he was raised by his grandparents and using their name instead of his birth certificate name. Anyway, thank you for your article. It really made him proud.

1. What qualifies you, other than your conservative beliefs and your right to voice them,
to consider yourself an expert on conservativism and liberalism?
2. What publications, other than opinions in editorial comments, have you in your resume?
3. Given that everyone has an opinion, what qualifies yours as superior other than basing them in your interpretation

4. Do you believe that the world is a dichotomoy of right and wrong, black and white, liberal and conservative,
 Christain and damned?

Just wondering?

Mr Hager,
Do you know even know what the word Liberal even means? It
has two definitions in my Websters dictionary, "open minded and
charitable". Your pastor at the church would therefore appreciate you
more if you was liberal and put more money in the plate instead of
being so fiscally conservative. The days of Barry Goldwater and
Ronald Reagan are over and you desperately need to accept that fact.
Whoopie Goldberg and myself were both welfare recipiants and now we
are both on our feet. We both have obtained beneficial careers and it
is because Uncle Sam gave some tax dollars back to people who actually
need it. Not like your political idea of welfare only being used by
those who abuse it. Also, if you are so against welfare explain your
further support of corporate welfare. Can anyone say hyppocrit!
People like you are actually against democracy and freedom in
reality. Your idealogy is sickning and disgusting and to think that
you claim to be a Christian disturbs
me even more. Jesus is NOT A REPUBLICAN!!!

Repsonses to Jimmy Carter: A National Disgrace

Hi Tony, this is uncle Raymond. Mollie sent me the piece about Jimmy Carter from the paper. I wanted to let you know that I am proud of you. You were able to say what me and most of my friends believe. I will be giving my e-mail friends your website address as I know they will enjoy visiting it.
Raymond H., NC
(There's just nothing like family to give a boost to the ego.)

The Bush administration will go down in history as the most damaging one to the United States' place in the world. When George W. Bush won the presidency he had hardly traveled outside the U.S. and knew nothing about the rest of the world. Now that he's been forced into world situations it's clear his policies are not working but damaging our credibility. Carter may have made mistakes, but Bush is topping him many times over. Even Tony Blair is being forced out of office for following Bush.
The world has become a much smaller place because of technology and the economy. You cannot just look at United States history when judging a president in our global setting. Many Americans think our country is all there is. But that is not true as 9/11 proved. At least Carter worked for peace and didn't attack another country militarily. He didn't get us in a mess that cost billions and billions of dollars and lost American lives.
I suggest you study WORLD History and look at the total picture before you further analyze political situations. Yes, fight back (in Afghanistan) when attacked, but dialogue otherwise. Neither the world nor the U.S. are safer. We have now created more terrorists because of Iraq. Education is vital. You should not judge a president without understanding what is causing events in the rest of the world. Thank you.
Sarah P.

(I don't agree with this lady's position. But, I do appreciate her willingness to offer an argument in lieu of name-calling. This is far more than we can say for "Charlie". See his fine mind on display in his well-developed argument farther down the page.)

The local rag sheet - the Gaston Gazette-- better known in my home as the 'Ghastley Gasette' published your tome on former president Jimmy Carter ---boy did you ever hit the nail on the proverbial head.

I have been an outspoken critic of Carter since he first ran for president- I was a neophyte reporter at the time and was stuck covering the Carter machine and actually followed his son Chip around upstate New York for a while. I later did interviews with his late sister - Jean Carter Stapleton so I had a little involvement with the Carter clan. They were always Kennedy wannabe's and just had good organizational skills that worked to get him elected despite his "lusting in his heart" comments.

Simple:

2) I have just read the article you wrote that was published in the 6/28/06 Gaston Gazette, and I am afraid (wait I must think) that the pacifists must abhor you. It was excellent satire, and while it was apparent early in the article where you were headed, I can’t help but wonder how many uninformed and unthinking readers had no idea what the point was until it was too late for them.
3) I don’t think that many will admit to realizing the point even after reading the article, as people are now so ignorant of world affairs, unable to actually think beyond a ten second sound bite, and unwilling to make any real commitment or sacrifice beyond next week.
Best wishes,

I have just started reading your web sight. It is very amusing. What brought it to my attention was your articles in the Gazette.
I used to consider myself a Democrat even though I have voted republican in the past. Now I don't know. I feel more comfortable calling myself an Independent.
Nothing disgusts me more than a Republican or Democrat that backs their respective parties just because they are the same party. Example: Hanity & Combs, Crossfire.
What happened to voting for the good of the people or the good of the country?
I moved here 3 years ago. I have done a lot of traveling and continue to be amazed at the differences in reporting by local papers. Some very right, some left. Same goes for the national columnist they use. I believe the term fair and balanced depends on where you are at in the country and who is judging.
I enjoy your articles even though being a "Yankee" I disagree with a lot of your conclusions. I do agree with many of them though so I guess there is hope for both of us.
